Lamplight Kitchen

When the current homeowners purchased this home, the existing kitchen fell short in both design and function. The cabinetry was mismatched, the wiring was faulty, and a structural post was awkwardly placed within the room. The overall layout of this kitchen was just not conducive to this family’s lifestyle, and they had decided that enough was enough. When we got the call to step in for this remodel project, we knew everything had to go. After the demo process brought everything in the kitchen down to the studs, a significant safety concern was brought to our attention. The existing structural post/beam had originally been sized incorrectly, meaning that it was insufficient to support the weight coming from above. Taking only a week out of our schedule, we were able to replace both the post and beam to the proper size to meet current code requirements and give the homeowners peace of mind in the safety of their home.

Once the mechanical items were also brought up to code, the new kitchen design really started to take shape. Working within the constraint of the structural post and beam, we decided to integrate these into the new design, creating a unique architectural form that encases the peninsula. To improve the overall efficiency of the kitchen, we relocated almost all “workstation” areas (sink, dishwasher, and range) to allow for more space per area, eliminating any congestion, while maintaining generous walking paths. For additional storage, we built a large pantry closet in the adjacent hallway. The materials found within this design include stained hickory cabinetry around the perimeter of the kitchen, a custom painted island that matches the peninsula structure to create continuity in the design, luxury vinyl tile flooring, and Cambria quartz countertop with a piece of full height backsplash behind the range for easy cleaning.  What started as a mismatched DIY kitchen has undergone a complete transformation, resulting in a functional and welcoming space tailored to this family’s needs.
