Redoing a kitchen changes how your whole house works day to day. Maybe you cook dinner every night. Maybe you’ve got friends and family crowding around the island every holiday. Or maybe the layout just drives you up the wall and you’re ready for something better. Whatever the reason, the kitchen is where most homes do their living, and a good update shows up in your routine right away.
The first thing nearly every homeowner asks us? “Okay, but what’s this going to cost me?”
Fair question. Here at Russell Room Remodelers, a full-service kitchen project usually lands between $70,000 and $100,000. We’ve pulled one off for $50,000 before, too. But that figure comes with strings attached. You’d be taking on some of the work yourself, or you’d be giving up certain features or a level of quality you might miss later. Cheaper sounds great until you’re living with the tradeoffs.
I know those numbers feel hefty, especially with the economy being what it is. Still, a kitchen that’s planned and built carefully gives back in lasting value, daily comfort, and a little peace of mind. So let’s walk through where the money goes. One thing first, though. Kitchen size matters a lot. Bigger rooms cost more than smaller ones, which is obvious, but it’s worth saying before we get into the details below.
Where the Money Goes in a Full Remodel
No two kitchens are alike, but most complete remodels break down into the same buckets.
- Design, planning, and permits. Everything starts here. We sit down with you, sort out a layout that suits how you move through the room, pick finishes that match your taste, and take care of the permit paperwork so you don’t have to. Expect about $6,000 to $8,000.
- Site prep and demolition. Nobody posts photos of this part, but it matters. Old materials come out, debris gets hauled off, and the room is readied for the new build. This usually runs $3,500 to $5,000.
- Mechanical systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC). You’ll never see most of this work once the walls are closed up, yet it often takes the biggest bite of the budget. New wiring, lighting plans, reworked plumbing lines, and HVAC adjustments typically cost $25,000 to $35,000, depending on how complicated your kitchen is.
- Cabinetry and millwork. Cabinets shape the look of the room, and they’re also one of the priciest line items. Custom or semi-custom, you’re probably looking at $20,000 to $30,000, and that covers trim, moldings, and the built-in touches that give a kitchen its personality.
- Countertops and tile. Think quartz or granite counters with a tile backsplash pulling everything together. Depending on your material choices and layout, this lands around $10,000 to $15,000.
- Drywall, insulation, and interior finishes. Insulation goes in, drywall goes up, and the surfaces get prepped so the room feels finished and stays comfortable. Budget somewhere from $3,000 to $10,000.
- Painting, flooring, and cleanup. Once the heavy construction is done, these final layers make the space livable. Paint, new flooring (wood or tile, say), and a thorough cleanup run roughly $6,000 to $8,000, and then you can move right back in.
- Project management and overhead. Somebody has to schedule the trades, track deliveries, and keep everyone on the same page. That oversight typically costs $9,000 to $11,000, and it’s what keeps your time, budget, and expectations from drifting apart as the job goes on.
Making Every Dollar Count
Pausing at these totals is natural. A remodel is a big commitment, no way around it. But few things you spend on at home pay you back as often as a kitchen does, meaning every single morning when you make coffee. A well-designed one will:
- Boost what your home is worth when it’s time to sell
- Make everyday cooking and cleanup smoother and more enjoyable
- Fix those old layout and storage headaches you’ve put up with for years
- Give you a spot to gather that you’re proud to show off
Even when the economy feels shaky, your house is still one of the steadier places to put your money. And when you work with us, the dollars go toward more than cabinets and countertops. You’re putting them into a room your family will use for decades.
