3-Season Porch & Patio – A Cozy, Year-Round Retreat

For this 3-season porch project in Woodbury, we replaced an unstable deck with a new porch above and a recessed patio below. The original deck had shifted due to frost-affected footings, so we installed helical piers, providing a solid foundation that resists movement—an ideal solution for the area’s clay-heavy soil.

To maximize warmth, we sprayed polyurethane foam insulation in the floor and ceiling, helping retain heat. A gas fireplace, with cultured stone, a limestone hearth, and a distressed mantel serves as both a heat source and the room’s focal point. The stained Tonge & Groove pine ceiling adds a rustic touch to both the porch and the patio below, while LVT flooring with electric in-floor heat ensures comfort even in colder months.

Inside, we replaced the home’s siding with shiplap for a clean, finished look, while on the outside we used fiber-cement siding to match the house. The recessed patio has stamped, colored concrete creating a private spot for the homeowners’ hot tub, making it a perfect relaxation space.

The result? A warm and inviting family gathering space that can be enjoyed nearly year-round in Minnesota—exactly what the homeowners wanted.
